Trump's Trial Is Already Wreaking Havoc on His Campaign

Trump’s Trial Is Already Wreaking Havoc on His Campaign
THE DEFENSE IS RESTLESS
The hush money trial was never going to be good for Trump, but the first week in court proved just how disruptive and damaging it will be for his 2024 bid.

TRIAL AND ERROR

Even before Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York began, it was clear that the lengthy and demanding proceedings would fundamentally change his 2024 campaign.

But it only took a few days to show that Trump’s hush money trial will be even more damaging, more constraining, and more significant than anyone expected.

Taken together, Republicans are left with little more than stopgap solutions and, in some cases, a humbling realization of what’s to come—given that the embarrassing details of his alleged plot to pay off porn star Stormy Daniels are yet to emerge.

“I had sort of underestimated just the giant time-suck this is going to be for him as a candidate,” Alex Conant, a GOP strategist and a top aide on Marco Rubio’s 2016 campaign told The Daily Beast.

Crucially, it’s not just time, but money, being left on the table as the hush money case drags on.

Probably not completely - I always thought the classified documents would be the coup de grace - but TSF is "going through some things" that I never saw coming. Good.

If this trial ends without a conviction, the media will roar about his victory and they will declare him back in the race and probably find a poll showing he's the front-runner.

And ignore that he's a rapist and defamer and still has more trials to come but they'll declare them irrelevant if the can't result in conviction prior to November.

They were trying to put Maga each other for governor, rep, senator, etc.

Come November, it may backfire, even in neo-Confederacy state like Indiana as Roevember may strike.

when you get on the Trump Train. He's just a mob boss with fewer scruples. It was bad enough that he bullied and blackmailed them, now he wants to fleece them as well. It's a racket.

They should have seen it coming.

We all make mistakes, but these so-called public servants compromised every principle they claimed to embrace. For most, I'm sure it didn't start out that way; just a small trade-off or two, but pretty soon they were in so deep, they couldn't back out.

Well of course, they could have walked away like a handful of republicans did, but most could not or would not let go of that power. And all that for a cartoonish carnival barker with bad hair and the temperament of a toddler.

I have no doubt that they always knew it would end badly, but I suppose they hoped they wouldn't get too tarnished in the process. Too late for that I'm afraid. It will be included in their obituary and their own Liz Cheney warned them.

It's not a hush money trial. That's the title used to minimize it's importance. It's a campaign law violation trial. He's being tried for breaking campaign laws.

That will have a far bigger impact with the general population then a wonkish trial about violationd of campaign finance laws.

And they forget there are so many other factors that will play out.

He doesn’t need to campaign, his voters are locked in no matter what and the media gives him billions of dollars in free advertising.

This is and was always going to be a coin flip election. We’ve got to turn out the vote like never before in the key swing states. I have no doubt that the President is going to crush in the popular vote but that is irrelevant. It’s going to be a squeaker where it matters, just like the last two times.
