A story published in the New York Post claimed Soros' Open Society Foundations were "paying student radicals."The idea that George Soros, the billionaire investor and philanthropist, has been funding protests in the United States is not new. It reappears nearly every time there's a major movement of left-leaning political activism.
In late April 2024, the question returned, this time about the pro-Palestinian encampments established at universities across the United States and beyond in solidarity with the residents of the Gaza Strip: Was Soros paying those protesters?
By going through the publicly available list of grants given by Soros' charity, the Open Society Foundations (OSF), Snopes found that one of the organizations involved in the protests received a grant from OSF. But it is very misleading to claim or suggest that Soros was funding the protests directly. Here's why:
The last publicly available records from the Open Society Foundations are from 2022, before the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023. As explained in The Washington Post, the money provided by those grants is long gone the organizations aren't just squirreling money away for two years until they need to pay people to protest. The claims spreading on social media, which originated from an article in the New York Post, used the exact same numbers that Snopes found online. This claim was based on old data.

(24,841 posts)Still have not read, but why would Soros hurt Biden? Assuming Russian/GOP disinformation...I guess I'd need to hear him prioritize the Palestinian plight against the rest of the world's flashpoints where 100s of millions of lives are at stake.

(102,591 posts)Because he has $$$ and uses it to support universities? Seems the very definition of Antisemitism that the RW has very cynically used against the Left for decades because Soros supports progressive/Democratic causes.
We are being manipulated by disinformation campaigns. Kindly remember that.
Thank you, Snopes for setting the record straight.

(102,591 posts)and probably Russia disinformation--as I stated in my post. That you felt it important to post here-- and at least one on the thread initially seemed receptive to it (having not read the Snopes piece)-- underscores that it is, indeed a problem. That is my question. Have WE gone so far afield that we are THAT receptive to this garbage?
I learned of this during a fishing trip with some wingnuts. The guy couldn't remember Soros' name, but it wasn't too hard to track down once I hit the internet. I have not yet confronted him with this. I will choose my time.
