I normally don't give 2 flips about what celebrities are doing, but this just illustrates how sexist things are when a WOMAN dates a younger man.
We see Kevin Costner & Harrison Ford with younger women, and there is no peep made. But when it's the other way around, there is a "public backlash."
Ridiculous.

(52,549 posts)Had 2 kids and died when the older child was 7.
That one did generate some headlines and backlash, but more because of having kids at that age than just because 75-25 years old age difference at the time of their wedding.

(3,923 posts)She seemed very nice. Hardly a gold digger. She said his children are a comfort to her because she sees so much of him in them.
I thought it was none of my business. It's none of my business who anyone marries or doesn't marry.

(20,816 posts)I admire that she admits to being dyslexic. She supported her trans son. Never been big on her extra-vulgar outfits, and she's not the greatest singer, ever. But I have to admire her keeping her nose clean in a filthy business.

(4,161 posts)But I have also noted that even if there is not a real backlash, it is treated as something funny as in comedy, whereas if it's a man with a younger woman, it's treated as something totally normal.

(1,650 posts)Way back in a 1991 or 1992 interview. They were lamenting how men were constantly cradle-robbing, but when a woman like Cher (the example they used!) went for a younger man, then people got all up in arms, describing the male as if he were some kind of sex slave, 'have him bathed and brought to my tent.' The double standard on this is quite annoying.
I'm married to someone 13 years my junior, and people are always making catty remarks about it. They wouldn't even notice if my husband were that much older than I am.

(3,054 posts)Cher is a woman.
Countless male celebs screw around for decades and then marry much younger women when they decide to settle down. Leonardo, Chris Evans, Harrison Ford
.
Women are treated as useless and washed up after 30-35. Thats why a woman expressing that she still has it, like Cher, is noteworthy. People dont like thinking older women are still sexual beings.
Its pretty nasty but standard treatment of women.

(9,206 posts)At least 30% of the Internet is non-stop commentary on Leonardo DiCaprio and his dating choices.
I think Cher's getting attention because she made public comments about it. If a 60 year old man in Hollywood gave an interview talking about how much better he liked dating a 20 year old, you don't think there'd be a reaction? In this day and age?
More power to Cher. Wherever consenting adults find their happiness is neat-o.
But it's 2024. People talk about age gaps with men all the time. Hell, Chris Evans just married someone sixteen years younger and there was . . . a lot of commentary about that one. A lot of eyebrows have been raised about Henry Cavill's habits as well.
But Cher is iconic, and she said this on daytime television. Of course people will talk about it. I don't think anyone truly cares though. Just idle fodder.
