Colombia will break relations with Israel over its actions in Gaza, Petro says

Source: NPR

May 1, 2024 5:05 PM ET

Colombia is set to break diplomatic relations with Israel over its actions in Gaza.

Speaking to a crowd in the capital Bogotá on Wednesday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that the country "will break diplomatic relations with the state of Israel" on Thursday, calling its government "genocidal." "If Palestine dies, humanity dies, and we are not going to let it die," he said.

Israel has strongly denied committing genocide in its war against Hamas in Gaza.

"History will remember that Gustavo Petro decided to side with the most despicable monsters known to mankind," Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Colombia is one of the U.S.'s closest partners in Latin America, and it has previously been a close partner of Israel.

Israel is hurtling towards fascism, Holocaust historian Daniel Blatman has said in an interview with Haaretz. Blatman is a professor at the Institute for Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University. His fields of interest are the Holocaust, Nazism, fascism, genocide and East European Jewry during the Holocaust. He is currently involved in establishing the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, which is scheduled to open in 2025.

Haaretz interviewed Blatman because of an article he had written in 2017 which predicted that Israel was heading for a collision of forces, the conclusion of which would be the end of democracy and the rise of fascism. His prediction has more or less played out exactly as he described six years ago, which is why he was asked to comment on the ongoing turmoil in Israel over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to overhaul the judiciary, and far-right politicians dominating the current Israeli government.

Alarmed by the rise of fascism in Israel, Blatman went on to say: “As a historian whose field is the Holocaust and Nazism, it’s hard for me to say this, but there are neo-Nazi ministers in the government today. You don’t see that anywhere else – not in Hungary, not in Poland – ministers who, ideologically, are pure racists.”

Populism has been on the ascendency in both Hungary and Poland but, according to Blatman, the drift towards fascism in Israel is unique. He believes that Israeli society has undergone a process of radicalisation.

now that may not be the case.

Hamas not only broke an existing ceasefire, deliberately attacked civilians, many who were sympathetic to the Palestinian plight, sexually mutilated, raped, and killed victims, have done no favors to the Palestinian cause.

A documentary about the rape and sexual crimes committed by Hamas terrorists on and after the October 7 massacre has been published online to watch for free.

The film, entitled Screams Before Silence and featuring eye-witness testimonies from survivors, accounts from first responders, and interrogation footage of members of Hamas, provides considerable evidence for a campaign of systematic rape by the terror group during its devastating assault on southern Israel six months ago.

The documentary is fronted by former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg who in the film returns to kibbutzim that were targeted on October 7 with former residents to hear in heart-wrenching detail what happened to them that morning.

Sandberg also travels to the site of the Nova music festival massacre, which is now scattered with hundreds of newly planted trees, Israeli flags, and the pictures of all those murdered.

That being said the Biden administration is working behind the scenes not only for a ceasefire, but also to try to establish a foundation for a two-state solution. While I am not particularly optimistic, at least there are efforts underway.

US and Saudis Near Defense Pact Aimed at Reshaping Middle East. Bloomberg News
Plan would offer incentives for Israel to end war with Hamas
Agreement paves way for Saudis to get advanced weapons

By Alberto Nardelli, Jennifer Jacobs, and Peter Martin

The US and Saudi Arabia are nearing a historic pact that would offer the kingdom security guarantees and lay out a possible pathway to diplomatic ties with Israel, people familiar with the matter said.

The agreement faces plenty of obstacles but would amount to a new version of a framework that was scuttled when Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel triggered the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Negotiations have sped up in recent weeks and many officials are optimistic that Washington and Riyadh could reach a deal within weeks, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations.

Such a deal would potentially reshape the Middle East. Beyond bolstering Israel and Saudi Arabia’s security, it would strengthen the US’s position in the region at the expense of Iran and even China.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-01/us-and-saudis-near-defense-pact-aimed-at-reshaping-middle-east

...........

"Once the US and Saudi Arabia settle their agreement, they would present Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a choice: either join the deal, which would entail formal diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia for the first time, more investment and regional integration, or be left behind. The key condition for Netanyahu would be ending the Gaza war and agreeing to a pathway for Palestinian statehood."

In the end, in order for any chance for peace Hamas and Netanyahu have to go.

Or should I say Monster said Rafa and all Gaza cities need to be annihilated. We have our version of these people here. They are called MAGA. These are religious crazy nutjobs. Same people here wanted to nuke Iraq after 9-11. Knee jerk extremists. We shouldn’t be supporting them there or here. It’s astonishing even here on DU that people don’t think these things through. Next thing human nature will prevail and we will be cheering on nuclear exchanges???

Of course it was evil and awful. But that we even have to say so shows the problem. It’s a given. And the response isn’t supposed to be genocide of a population. Bombing from the air wiping out all the women and children. Everyone sees it. Most people know it. And yes it’s genocide. And no it’s not acceptable because it happens in Africa. What is wrong with peoples heads???
