UCLA clashes: Police criticised for 'delayed' response to violence

The office of California's governor has criticised the police response to violence on campus at the University of California, Los Angeles.

A masked pro-Israeli group assaulted a pro-Palestinian student camp, before officers were called to the campus.

Governor Gavin Newsom's spokesperson said the "limited and delayed" police intervention was "unacceptable".

Hundreds of police officers were on campus and around the perimeter on Wednesday.

2. Everyone says it's only the pro-Palestinian groups doing violence, right? Only groups my ass!

Don't fucking tell me the pro-Israel groups aren't capable of it as violence as well. All I have heard in the last several days from most media is the pro-Palestinian groups supposedly doing violence in the colleges, well here's one pro-Israel group that is doing the same thing. But most of the media is bought for and too afraid to admit that pro-Israel groups can be just as violent. They don't have the guts to do so.

4. Actually, from what I have read

The pro-Israel protesters were not students, but gathered for the
sole purpose of threatening the pro-Palestinian protesters. They
brought bats and some kind of unidentified gas Ended up
physically injuring at least 15 to 20 students, one who injuries were
severe enough to be hospitalized while the LAPD stood by for an hour.

This is a major escalation from anything the pro-Palestinian protestors
have done anywhere in the country.

But as far as I know of, and maybe I am wrong, both sides were not completely composed of students. That being said, this incident means that the pro-Israel groups, at least in this case, have lost any right to complain about the pro-Palestinian groups being the supposedly sole proprietor of violence. If we are going to be critical of pro-Palestinian groups supposedly using violence, then the same standard has to be done to pro-Israel groups. Mind you, I think the protests are well coordinated. Also, I think some of these pro-Israel groups are aligned with Christian Nationalists and or people who support Netanyahu and his cronies.

7. I agree with you.

It is scary stuff. Often situations are other than they appear. Lots of potential
to mislead and manipulate on all sides.

I would like to see more Universities manage these protests the way
Brown did. Listen to the students and negotiate with them 'After
the administration agreed to vote on divestment, the protests ended
peacefully and the students went home. There was no need to go to war
with students and risk the kinds of escalation that happened at UCLA.

The police let the goon squads in with bats to kick ass. Just like they have let Proud Boys and other right wing groups attack BLM protestors. Same formula. Similar to Brown Shirts. Crazy watching what we are all in for in the future when things get unstable.

8. agree that this is a relatively new spin

also agree that most of the accusations have flowed in the other direction (probably with some justification) prior to this. Other hand - I think violent confrontation has been fairly minimal (both sides) up until now - with a lot of the complaints pointing toward destruction, damage and defacement of property. Maybe a little push and shove here and there - but mostly with no real intent to cause physical harm.

The confrontation last night at UCLA looked like a different MO, and opened up a relatively new chapter.

Unfortunately, we've seen similar things develop before. After a time there were elements in Portland (OR) whose raison d'etre essentially boiled down to going out each night looking for a fight.
