Biden to announce $3 billion to replace lead pipes

Source: The Hill

05/02/24 5:00 AM ET

President Biden will announce Thursday that his administration will be doling out $3 billion in funds to replace lead pipes, which can pose a health hazard. Biden will announce the funds, part of a total of $15 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, during a trip to Wilmington, N.C., to replace these pipes.

He will also announce the first Bipartisan Infrastructure Law-funded lead pipe replacement in Wilmington is underway. North Carolina is slated to get $76 million of the total $3 billion being dispersed. That $3 billion is expected to replace up to 1.7 million lead pipes, the White House said. The U.S. currently has an estimated 9.2 million lead service lines.

While the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s funding is expected to make a significant dent in the nation’s lead pipe problem, environmental advocates have expressed concern that it is not enough.

No safe level of lead in drinking water has been identified. Exposure to the substance can damage children’s brains and nervous systems. The most infamous incident of lead poisoning in the U.S. was the water crisis in Flint, Mich., though numerous other areas have also dealt with such problems.

9.7 lead service lines to homes that 40 years ago or older, once had children drinking and bathing in water that came from those service lines.

Someone should survey the over 50 year old MAGAs ( actually any adult MAGA person ) and find out if they, as children, lived in the houses with lead pipes or lead paint.

We can see the brain damage quite clearly in children and older adults.

So that means adults are damaged too.
But it is less obvious in them except in the voting booth
and ridiculous MAGA behavior.

because the "American People" love toxic water.. or some dumb shit. I do believe much of the stupidity is a result of drinking water that is tainted with lead. We took it out of gas, finally, and saw results in the next generation.

Lead was a big factor in the decline of the Roman empire.

look at the chemicals in food, the pesticide spraying and a host of other things.
If you have ever stood in a line at at a grocery store, it is not unusual to see someone or a family, particularly on a lower income, with bags of chips, sweets, pop, pre-packaged foods...there are lots of chemicals in that stuff. I mean, what actually does America make but mostly chemicals.

I am glad they are starting to address the lead pipe issue though.

that the reason violent crime is so low nowadays (especially compared to the 70s-90s) is that less kids are growing up around lead paint, lead in the atmosphere, etc. It’s an interesting thought.
