learn I wanted to learn to tap dance as a youngster. I found a place that had adult beginner tap classes, I was not very good, but I did it.

Great stuff.

And remember, 90% of carpentry is making your own ad hoc jigs (thats the fun part!)

(65,788 posts)There are famous guitar players that haven't gotten any better (or more interesting) since they were 15.
You could always believe you'd have been an interesting player!
I still play piano, guitar, or both every day. I don't think retirement would have been as satisfying if I didn't have music to play & new ideas to explore.
Good thing, too. I'm way too lazy to get much into gardening!

(9,300 posts)Im actually pretty accomplished on the sax (play in community band, church etc) but never got the hang of an instrument that did multiple notes at a time. I feel like Im too old to learn something so complex.

(65,788 posts)It's still the same music, just a different technique.
Also, there's no such thing as a cheap, bad guitar anymore. The low cost stuff is pretty darned good & highly playable.
Once you get past the "fingertips hurt" (after all, we do push steel wires down onto a hard surface) period, you might have big fun.
I've got 13 guitars & a piano here to keep me occupied!

(65,788 posts)My wife was interested once, but she never got past the "it hurts my fingers" point.
She's a pretty good singer & has a good ear. I think she would have done ok.
It's not like she has regrets about it.
My pro tip: since you have a GC, look at Fender or Yamaha acoustic guitars.
They make decent sounding, easy to play but inexpensive guitars.
I found 11 for $200 or less (brand new) on their website.

(10,529 posts)I may give it a try.
I've never had time to learn and now all of my relatives who would have taught me, like my grandmother, have died. Im retiring in about a year and hope to find some resources online.

(22,323 posts)The 'tutors' are very good, and clearly demonstrate the method. Give it a shot.
My favorites are Creative Grandma and Bag 'O Day Crochet but there are many others
When I am learning a new stitch or pattern, I pull the video up on the laptop. I get the best view of the work and can pause it as needed.
I did a little crochet years ago, back in my 20s and just stopped for some reason. When my daughter told me she was pregnant I knew I had to make something for that baby, and that got me back in. I am really enjoying it; it is relaxing and nice to feel creative. It's fun to master a new stitch.
Since I made that first blanket for my little girl 5 years ago, I have made 6 blankets for new moms and 4 full size blankets (about the size of a double mattress) I am getting ready to make one for my sister's new grandson.

I always wanted to learn to play the drums. When I was in grade school we were all tested to see if there were any kids that had some musical inclinations, and mine was rhythm. Mom said we couldnt afford any such thing, so the lid was shut on that.
Throughout my adult life, I spent too much time thinking about it, and procrastinating too long.
Too many herniated discs and rheumatoid arthritis stands in my way now.
Great topic! Thank you! 😊

(1,001 posts)There were piano teachers available but no piano in my home. No space for one and probably not enough money to comfortably cover lessons and music for me and my siblings. BUT the public school I attended had elementary school band including a private lesson each week with the band director. Music stores had rent to buy the instruments. I still play the clarinet my parents bought me 67 years ago - I lucked out - the instrument is a really good semi- professional model. And yes I did thank my parents in their later years for the sacrifices they made. My siblings played in the band, too. Some longer than others. I am the only one who still regularly plays.
And the piano? Took class piano in college. I can play
. sort of. 😁
Kudos to the the very small rural public school board who understood the importance of music and were willing to adequately fund the program.
