Michael Cohen and Rosie O'Donnell: A Love Story

New York Times

The text came through on Michael D. Cohen’s iPhone on Monday morning, shortly before he took the stand in a Manhattan courtroom as the star witness in the criminal case against his former boss, Donald J. Trump: “breathe - relax - tell the truth - u got this - i love u.”

An hour later, another text came in from the same person: “Ur doing great.”

“Thank you and truly love you,” Mr. Cohen wrote back to the sender, who was not his wife, either of his children or another family member, but the comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell.

Politics, the cliché goes, makes strange bedfellows. But few relationships seem as unlikely as the intense bond that has developed between Mr. Cohen and Ms. O’Donnell, two Long Island natives of the same generation who were pulled into Mr. Trump’s force field in vastly different ways years ago, and who connected as they surveyed the damage afterward.

It is not lost on Ms. O’Donnell, 62, that Mr. Cohen, 57, once helped carry out Mr. Trump’s campaign of insults against her, tormenting her for her looks and her weight and calling her “wacko.”

S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow all hit record highs after encouraging inflation data

Source: CNN

All three major indexes surged to record highs Wednesday after new data showed that inflation cooled in April after ticking up recently.

The S&P 500, tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite and blue-chip Dow all closed at new record highs after the latest Consumer Price Index showed that prices were up 3.4% for the 12 months ended in April, easing from 3.5% the month before.

The broad-market S&P 500 gained more than 1.2% on Wednesday and cracked the 5,300-level for the first time, closing at 5,308.15. The Nasdaq was about 1.4% higher, setting a new record at 16,742.39. The Dow, meanwhile, was up 350 points or 0.9% and teetered near the key 40,000-level, closing at 39,908. All three major indexes are tracking toward a winning week.

Statement by the Biden-Harris campaign to the Commission on Presidential Debates

BIDEN
HARRIS
May 15, 2024

Dear Commission on Presidential Debates,

President Joe Biden believes the interests of the American people are best served by presidential debates that offer timely and relevant information to help inform voters before they make their choices - and that allow a head-to-head comparison of the two candidates with a chance of winning the election. To that end, President Biden recently said he intends to debate former President Donald Trump in 2024, and intends to debate him twice. Vice President Harris also plans to debate her eventual opponent. For his part, Donald Trump has announced that he is prepared to have these debates "anytime, anywhere.”

The purpose of this letter is to provide notice that the President will not be participating in the Commission on Presidential Debates' announced debates in 2024 and plans to participate in debates hosted by news organizations.

There are a number of reasons why the years-long Presidential Commission model for these debates is out of step with changes in the structure of our elections and the interests of voters. The reasons for this include:

First: The Commission's schedule has debates that begin after the American people have a chance to cast their vote early, and doesn't conclude until after tens of millions of Americans will have already voted. The Commission's failure, yet again, to schedule debates that will be meaningful to all voters - not just those who cast their ballots late in the fall or on Election Day - underscores the serious limitations of its outdated approach.

Second: The Commission's model of building huge spectacles with large audiences at great expense simply isn't necessary or conducive to good debates. The debates should be conducted for the benefit of the American voters, watching on television and at home - not as entertainment for an in-person audience with raucous or disruptive partisans and donors, who consume valuable debate time with noisy spectacles of approval or jeering. As was the case with the original televised debates in 1960, a television studio with just the candidates and moderators is a better, more cost-efficient way to proceed: focused solely on the interests of voters.

Third: The Commission includes rules that candidates were called upon to follow, and yet it was unable or unwilling to enforce the rules in the 2020 debates. The result was far from-indeed entirely inconsistent with— the orderly and informative process the voters deserved in 2020 and should be able to expect in 2024.

Comprehensive Timeline on False Electors Scheme in 2020 Presidential Election

Just Security

A part of former President Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election involved an effort to misuse the Electoral College in seven battleground states. On Dec. 14, 2020, legitimate members of the Electoral College met across the country to sign certificates declaring which presidential candidate won their state. That day, in several states that Biden had won, Republicans met to sign certificates declaring that they were the “duly elected and qualified” members of the Electoral College and falsely declaring Trump the winner of their state. They sent their documents to the National Archives.

In the runup to Jan. 6, 2021, these false certificates were used in an effort to claim that Vice President Mike Pence could decide either not to recognize any electors from these “disputed states” (meaning an outright Trump win) or else delay the certification of the election.

These actions, and the conspiracy that gave rise to them, have been the subject of multiple criminal indictments. The scheme is included among the conduct charged in the federal indictment against former President Donald Trump by the Department of Justice’s Office of Special Counsel. False electors in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Nevada also face criminal charges. In Wisconsin, the false electors and two attorneys who aided and abetted them settled civil litigation arising from their actions, and a criminal investigation in Wisconsin is reportedly ongoing.

What follows is a Timeline that provides the most comprehensive factual record to date showing the points of contact between Donald Trump and his close associates and the false slate of electors scheme. This includes documents recently disclosed as a result of the settlement of Penebaker v. Hitt, the civil case brought against the false Wisconsin electors and the attorneys who abetted them.
