What will happen when the prosecution rests in the Trump business fraud trial

First, the Defense will ask the Judge for a directed verdict of "not guilty". It's a standard procedure and it never works.

Then, the Defense will do one of two things: they'll either put Trump on the Stand (its ultimately his choice, not theirs) or they'll rest their case (effectively saying the Prosecution didn't present any evidence that needs to be refuted).

nb: the Defense has only laid out one possible witness: Karen McDougal. And she won't be offering anything useful.

This could be before the Jury by the end of next week.

Columbia University graduate in zip ties rips diploma during ceremony amid Gaza protests

A Columbia University graduate in zip ties and a keffiyeh ripped their diploma on stage at the social work graduation ceremony amid ongoing pro-Palestinian protests at the beleaguered Ivy League school.

Video of the protest, which went viral Sunday night after the campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine posted the clip on social media, showed the master’s program graduate cross the stage with their hands above their head, before tearing the degree in two and tossing it behind them.

The protester then held up their graduation cap, reportedly decorated with the name of a Palestinian prisoner, Mohammad Natsheh, during the Friday evening event. University officials twice this semester summoned the NYPD to arrest pro-Palestinian campus protesters, who were placed in the plastic handcuffs the graduate wore.

Wisconsin Supreme Court To Consider Reinstating Ballot Drop Boxes for 2024

Democracy Docket

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Wisconsin Supreme Court will hold oral argument on Monday to decide whether election officials can reinstate secure ballot drop boxes for the 2024 election.

At next week’s argument, the state Supreme Court’s majority-liberal bench will consider whether to overturn a July 2022 decision in Teigen v. Wisconsin Elections Commission, which resulted in a statewide prohibition on the use of drop boxes.

In Teigen, the court’s then-conservative majority held that drop boxes are unauthorized under Wisconsin law and concluded that voters may only return absentee ballots via mail or in person to a municipal clerk. “An inanimate object, such as a ballot drop box, cannot be the municipal clerk,” the opinion stated.

Monday’s argument stems from a lawsuit filed last summer by Priorities USA, the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans and an individual voter challenging the state’s ban on drop boxes, among other restrictions on absentee voting.

Return of the meme stock: GameStop shares jump 30% as trader 'Roaring Kitty' posts online for first time in years

NBC News

GameStop shares rallied more than 37% in the premarket Monday after “Roaring Kitty,” the man who inspired the epic short squeeze of 2021, posted online for the first time in roughly three years.

The post, a picture on X of a video gamer leaning forward on their chair as to indicate he’s taking the game seriously, marked Roaring Kitty’s first post on the platform — or on Reddit— since 2021.

Roaring Kitty, whose legal name is Keith Gill, was a former marketer for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance. Gill, who goes by DeepF------Value on Reddit, attracted an army of day traders who cheered each other on and piled into the brick-and-mortar video game stock and call options between 2020 and 2021.

Hedge fund Melvin Capital, which was heavily shorting GameStop, became a target of the army of amateur traders and suffered huge losses that prompted the hedge fund arm of Citadel, as well as Point72, to infuse close to $3 billion into Melvin to backstop its finances.

North Macedonia president-elect sparks row with Greece at swearing-in

Politico

North Macedonia’s newly elected nationalist president hadn’t even been sworn in on Sunday before triggering a diplomatic spat with neighboring Greece.

During the swearing-in ceremony in the country’s parliament, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, who is the young nation’s first female president, referred to her country as “Macedonia” rather than by its constitutional name, “North Macedonia.”

Greece’s ambassador to Skopje, Sophia Philippidou, immediately left the inauguration ceremony in protest.

In a statement, Greece’s Foreign Ministry said the new president’s words had violated the terms of the 2018 international Prespa Agreement between Athens and Skopje, and had endangered both bilateral relations and North Macedonia’s prospects of joining the European Union.

Perhaps Greece could rename their province "South Macedonia"?

Roger Corman, Pioneering Independent Producer and King of B Movies, Dies at 98

Source: Variety

Legendary B-movie king Roger Corman, who directed and produced hundreds of low-budget films and discovered such future industry stars as Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, has died. He was 98.

Corman died May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., surrounded by family members, the family confirmed to Variety.

“His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that,'” the family said in a statement.

Corman’s empire, which existed in several incarnations, including New World Pictures, and Concorde/New Horizons, was as active as any major studio and, he boasted, always profitable. He specialized in fast-paced, low-budget genre movies — horror, action, science fiction, even some family fare — and his company became a work-in-training ground for a wide variety of major talents, from actors like Nicholson (“Little Shop of Horrors”) and De Niro (“Boxcar Bertha”) to directors like Francis Ford Coppola (“Dementia 13”) and Scorsese (“Boxcar Bertha”).
